Contender for Worst Dive Ever? (Peter Wisgerhof of FC Twente vs Ajax Amsterdam)

Friday, August 12, 2011

By Marcel Abboud

In many parts of Europe, the football season has just commenced and everything that comes along with it. The excitement of the games, the goals, the passion of the fans and of course (the worst element of it all) diving.

In what can be only described as theatrics at it's finest, Peter Wisgerhof of FC Twente executes the biggest dive so far in the 2011/12 football season against Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam. He even has the audacity to complain to the referee why the call hasn't gone his way.

Could this be the worst dive? Judge for yourself...

The Bravest Penalty Kick Ever: Theyab Awana's Back Heel Penalty

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

By Marcel Abboud

If penalty kicks could get crazy, then look no further than this.

In a recent international friendly, United Arab Emirates winger Theyab Awana scored an outrageous back-heel penalty against Lebanon in their 6 - 2 win over the Middle Eastern side.

Not only did the 21 year old Baniyas SC winger managed to wrong foot the goalkeeper, he also incured the wrath of many of the Lebanese players and even his very own manager,
Srecko Katanec. Theyab was immediately substituted after only being on the field for a remarkable three minutes for a "lack of respect" towards the Lebanese opposition.

Theyab faces disciplinary action from the UAE football federation, either facing suspension or a fine for his actions.

Was it really the bravest penalty kick ever taken, or perhaps the stupidest? Watch the remarkable and yet comical footage of Theyab's goal here:

Bayern Munich push aside Qatar 4 - 2 in Friendly in Italy

Sunday, July 10, 2011

By Marcel Abboud

German football heavyweights Bayern Munich have defeated the Qatar national football team 4 - 2 in a friendly in the
Italian province of Trentino.

The Bavarian giants who had completed an absolute 15 - 0 destruction of a
Trentino Select XI during their time in the province, took a three goal lead quickly into the match thanks to Daniel van Buyten, Thomas Muller and fresh recruit Nils Petersen.

The Qataris who are preparing for their two legged tie against Vietnam, made their mark on the scoresheet after naturalised Qatari/Uruguayan Sebastian Quintana added his name, before Ivica Olic and Muhammed Razak finalized the score in the closing stages in front of a 4,000 strong crowd.

Celtic FC take down a defiant Perth Glory FC

By Marcel Abboud

Traveling Scottish side Celtic FC made up for their 1 - 0 loss to Central Coast Mariners last week after defeating fellow Hyundai A-League side Perth Glory 2 - 0 at nib Stadium in Perth.

Perth coach Ian Ferguson added six new faces to the Glory's starting XI, including Dutch defender Bas Van den Brink and high-profile New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz to liven up a previously dull and underachieving Perth side.

While the match started off tight and cagey, the Hoops eventually got the opening goal thanks to a nicely worked Gary Cooper finish in the 16th minute and claiming the game in the 51st minute, as defender Charlie Mulgrew rose and headed home a Ki Sung Yueng free kick.

The Hoops should have extended their lead many times in the game, but a new Perth Glory defense (and help from the woodwork) made sure the score stayed at 2 - 0 at the end of the game in front a healthy 15,350 strong home crowd.

It's still early days for the Glory but with some extra work and an injection of stability into the lineup, the boys from Western Australia could inflict some damage into the upcoming A-League 2011/2012 season.

Mexico stunned as Peru are on the Verge of Copa America Quarterfinals

Saturday, July 9, 2011

By Marcel Abboud

South American darkhorses Peru are on the verge of qualifying for the quarter finals of the 2011 Copa America after defeating Mexico 1 - 0 at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas.

In a very open and attacking match, both sides had numerous chances to stamp their authority in the game. Mexico are yet to collect a point in the group stages before this match and only a win would suffice for El Tri.

Coming out all cylinders firing, the Mexicans had an abundance of chances to kill of Peru but were made to go wanting in the second half as the Peruvians launched an assault on Mexican goalkeeper and captain Luis Michel's goal. The Mexicans can thank the woodwork as their added defense as many of the Peruvian attacks ended up hitting the post and the crossbar.

But for all of Mexico's attacking prowess, Peru struck the killer blow in the 83th minute as Humburger SV striker
José Paolo Guerrero put the ball into Michel's goal after a wonderful piece of creative display for the Peruvians.

Mexico sit rooted to the bottom of Group C with no points while Peru now sit second in the group equal with Chile on four points, while Urugauy still have a chance to progress but only if they defeat Mexico. Watch extended highlights here:

Darlington Nagbe's wonder goal for Portland Timbers

Thursday, July 7, 2011

By Marcel Abboud

There must be something in the water that all the Major League Soccer (MLS) drink because as of late spectacular goals have been flying in left, right and center...

This time Portland Timbers' Darlington Nagbe steps up to the plate with an absolutely wonderful strike against Sporting Kansas City. The 20 year old Liberian struck the ball after two perfectly timed touches on the volley before hammering it into the goal to score for the Timbers.

Is it a contender for goal of the season? You better believe it is...

Watch the audacity of the strike and judge for yourself

Iker Casillas to Remain as Real Madrid Captain

By Marcel Abboud

Despite rumors and media speculation that the Real Madrid icon would be stripped of the captaincy, Iker Casillas will stay on as captain after discussions with manager Jose Mourinho.

The veteran Real Madrid goalkeeper, who has been at the club since his youth and is a product of the club's famed youth system will continue to captain the club that he has led since 2010 after the departure of club icon and talisman striker Raul Gonzalez.

The Madrid giants have a tradition of handing the captiancy to long standing players, as "St. Iker" as he is affectingly known to fans has been with the club since 1990 in the youth system and in the first team since 1997 when making his first team debut in the UEFA Champions League against Rosenborg. But it wasn't until the season later (1998/1999) where he made his first team debut in La Liga and has since amassed over 400+ games for Los Blancos and has been the number one keeper at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu ever since.

The Matildas Secure their Passage into the Quarter Finals after Overcoming Norway

By Marcel Abboud

The Australian Women's National Football Team (known as the Matildas) took their tournament progression into the quarter finals by the scruff of the neck by coming back from behind to defeat Norway 2 - 1 in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Leverkusen
. Coming into the game, the Matildas needed at least a draw to progress, while for the Norwegian women nothing but a win would do.

In a tight contest, The Matildas fell behind early in the second half as long standing captain and goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri failed to collect an oncoming ball due to a Australian defensive error, with young Norway striker
Elise Thorsnes thrashing the ball into the net in the 57th minute.

Not even a minute had passed when Sydney FC striker Kyah Simon restored parity with a fine strike from the centre of the box, making the scores 1 - 1 after a fantastic cross from talisman striker Lisa De Vanna.

The Matildas sealed their progression into the quarterfinals thanks to yet again another goal from Simon in the 87th minute, after an over-hit corner was crossed in by Kim Carroll and met the head of Simon, evading all the Norwegian defense and into the goal.

The win sees The Matildas progress into the quarter finals, but a lot more work is needed defensively if the ladies in Green and Gold are to progress any further.

How The Mighty Can Fall: Argentinean Powerhouse River Plate Are Relegated

The most successful club of Argentinean football, Club Atlético River Plate, commonly known as River Plate have been relegated to the second division of Argentinean football Nacional B for the first time in their 110 year history.

This comes as little shock to those who have been following Los Millonario, as their poor form has been evident for quite some time. These poor results culminated in a relegation/promotion playoff between Belgrano de Córdoba, to which over a two legged affair saw Belgrano take a two-nil lead into the second leg. River Plate were unable to mount a comeback at their home stadium at El Monumental and succumbed to a 1 - 1 in the second as Belgrano secured promotion to the top flight.

As it came to pass, perhaps one of the most prestigious and well-known clubs of Argentinean (and South American) football saw themselves relegated to the second division, a league that they had not ever tread into in their vast and glorious history.

The emotion displayed from the players is evident as they must now confront their fans

After the 1-1 draw at El Monumental, fans of Los Millionario began rioting throughout the streets and were greeted by a heavy police enforcement.

Should one be feeling empathetic? Or perhaps apathetic?

There is only one way to find out, to see how Los Millionarios react from their relegation and how they must now dominate Nacional B to regain their status amongst the footballing heavyweights of South American football.

Most of us are used to seeing Wayne Rooney or Lionel Messi step up to the spot to quickly slot away a penalty. Often these penaties may be retaken without any complaints.
