One for the underdogs: Crazy results in the latest round of international football

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

By Marcel Abboud

Celebrate for football's international minnows!

In what turned out to be a very crazy round of football (7/9/11), many of FIFA's minnows have recorded remarkable draws or even incredible wins against much more fancied opponents. Many people would have written these nations off, but they played their hearts out and triumphed (or almost triumphed) against all odds to salvage a point or to claim all three points.

Who would have known?

2014 FIFA World Cup Qualification (Asain Confederation):

Lebanon 3-1 United Arab Emirates

Jordan 2-1 China

Kuwait 1-1 South Korea

2012 UEFA European Championship Qualification:

Slovakia 0-4 Armenia

Moldova 0-2 Hungary

Azerbaijan 3-2 Kazakhstan

Luxembourg 2-1 Albania

Malta 1-1 Georgia

Iceland 1-0 Cyprus

So next time you see an underdog team and they get absolutely destroyed by the opposition, don't feel sorry for them: support them!

Northern Irish Wonder Goal Sinks Lowly Faroe Islands

Friday, August 12, 2011

By Marcel Abboud

Here's a cracking effort that many would have missed...

In the recent round of 2014 FIFA World Cup UEFA qualifications Northern Ireland defeated Faroe Islands 4 - 0, with thanks to a spectacular solo effort from Celtic FC midfielder Paddy McCourt.

Who could argue with a stunning effort like that?

The Faroe Island remain bottom of their group following their loss to the Northern Irish and have no chance of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup

Memorable Games: Australia vs Italy (0-1 Germany 2006 World Cup)

Friday, April 22, 2011

Italy went on to win the 2006 World Cup in Germany, however not without facing a few hurdles on the way. Australia had qualified for just their second World Cup and were on a roll, qualifying for the round of 16 for the first time in their history. It looked to be going well for the Aussies who had Italy on the ropes, as the Italians were down a man.

In the 93rd minute a dubious penalty was awarded, and was converted by Totti, it inevitably sealed the fate of the Aussies who were knocked out by the soon to be Champions of the World.

Memorable Games: Cameroon 2 - 1 Columbia (1990 FIFA World Cup)

Thursday, April 14, 2011

In the 1990 edition of the FIFA World Cup in Italy, a 38 year old Roger Milla shone as one of the tournament's greatest players. Despite perhaps being the oldest player in that particular tournament, he led the Cameroonian frontline scoring four goals in total while in Italy.

His two most important goals came against Columbia in the Round of 16 in extra time. Locked a 0 - 0 after 90 minutes of play, Milla managed to carry Cameroon into the quarter-finals by scoring two very important and crucial goals against the team from South America. Showing grace and finesse, Milla managed to guide the West African nation for the first time in their history into the quarter finals, made more remarkable by the fact that it was the first time any African nation managed to reach this stage (which has thus been matched by Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010).

Cameroon were subsequently knocked out of the tournament by England, loosing 3 - 2 at the end of the game.

Celebrating his goals by going to the corner post and dancing, it become the focus of a 2010 World Cup ad by Coca Cola.

Memorable Games: Germany 3 - 2 Urguay (Third Place Playoff, 2010 FIFA World Cup)

Monday, March 28, 2011

In what was perhaps the most enthralling match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, a very attacking Germany managed to defeat a gallant and brave Uruguay side 3 goals to 2.

Managing to come back from a 2 - 1 deficit, the Germans after going ahead from a Thomas Muller goal in the first half managed to level the game in the 55th minute thanks to a Marcell Jensen header, before Sami Khedira won the game late in the second half, popping up to slot home the winner.

Perhaps the best two teams in the tournament didn't make the final, but they surely went out with a bang. Football was the winner in this game.
